They were both designed with a Wankel engine in mind? Both bankrupted their company? They’re both awesome? A version of both is stored in the shop where I store/work on my project car?

Wankel is the right answer, or rather one of them.
Both cars used a three speed manual box with a torque converter to make up for the lack of torque (standard on the NSU, extra on the Citroen) which Citroen retained for a few years after abandoning the three rotor engine.
